Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb will step down later this year after serving as the mayor of Rotterdam for 15 years, as announced in his speech during the municipality’s New Year’s reception at Rotterdam City Hall. Aboutaleb, who has held the position since 2009, believes it is time to make way for a new mayor.
During his 2024 address, Aboutaleb revealed that he had discussions with the Commissioner of the King last summer to communicate his decision. He expressed his intention to resign well before the upcoming municipal elections, emphasizing that he will leave after the summer to allow the council sufficient time to search for his successor. Aboutaleb assured the city council that he will continue to wholeheartedly dedicate himself to the city until the official termination of his appointment.
The mayor began his third term in 2021, with mayoral terms lasting six years for Rotterdam. However, Aboutaleb will not complete his third term, choosing to conclude his tenure later this year.
